Hemisferios Biodiversity Reserve

The Hemisferios Biodiversity Reserve is a transitional forest between cloud forest and Andean forest of 2,168 hectares, located on the eastern face of the Antisana volcano in the foothills of the Amazon rainforest of Ecuador. The reserve is located in the elbow formed by the Guacamayos and Andes mountain ranges on the basins of the Aragon, Cosanga and Colorado rivers. It is located 3 hours from the city of Quito and 10kms from the municipality of Cosanga, Napo province.

Typical mountain jungle fauna includes the puma at the top of the food chain, spectacled bears, small ocelots and red foxes. Medium-sized mammals such as tapir and deer, and medium and small rodents such as Andean and country mice, shrews and marsupials. In addition, countless species of birds.

The area where the reserve is located is considered an Important Bird and Biodiversity Conservation Area, with more than 320 bird species recorded.

Neighbors

Because of the kindness of the neighbors and communities in the area, it is safe for research and academic activities. To protect the ecosystem, vehicles only drive up to the entrance of the reserve. The lodge is a 20-minute walk (approximately 1.8 km). Transportation into the reserve is on foot.

The richness of its flora is composed of ecosystems with a high degree of humidity, including tree species over 10 meters high, shrubs of significant longevity, ferns, lichens and exotic fungi due to their rarity.
